Mobile Lighting Tower FAQs

Feb 08,2022

With many people across Australia using PowerLink mobile lighting towers, we often have customers asking us questions relating to our products. So, we have compiled a list of the most frequent questions asked to help anybody who is seeking more information about mobile lighting towers.

What’s the best type of lighting tower – diesel, hybrid or solar?

The best type of lighting tower really depends on the application you are using it for.

Diesel lighting towers are best for applications like mining, road works, construction sites or anywhere that needs high light output where reliability is important. Hybrid lighting towers, which are a combination of diesel and battery, are best for applications with medium light output in sound sensitive environments. Solar lighting towers are best for low light output in areas with high sun levels.

Can a lighting tower be used in all weather conditions?

Lighting towers can generally be used in all weather conditions. All PowerLink lighting towers feature a galvanised steel canopy, protecting the internal components from weather elements, and have a wind rating of 100km/h.

Is there a maximum noise level that is acceptable?

The maximum acceptable noise level is 75dba @ 7 metres. All PowerLink mobile lighting towers have noise level ratings below 60dba @ 7 metres.

The light output of PowerLink lighting towers depends on several factors. All PowerLink lighting towers use LED lights, however, there are many different light heads available in varying colour temperatures to suit each customer’s requirements. How easily can a lighting tower be transported between locations?

Each PowerLink lighting tower is designed for easy manoeuvrability and transportation. They have forklift slots and central lifting points, allowing them to be towed or transported on a truck.

What’s the difference between metal halide light towers and LED light towers?

Metal halides produce light when an electrical arc travels through a mixture of gases, usually mercury, xenon or argon whereas LEDs produce light when an electrical current travels through a microchip, lighting up small light sources (the LEDs).

The main benefits if using LED lights over metal halides are:

  • Fuel usage: LED lights use approximately 40% less fuel than metal halide lights for the same light flux.
  • Service life: LED lights have a longer service life and require less maintenance.
  • Energy efficiency: LED lights are more energy efficient

At PowerLink, we utilise LED lights across our entire lighting tower range. For more detailed information, please contact our Lighting Tower Business Development Manager, John Mikic, on info@powerlinkworld.com.au.

What maintenance does a diesel lighting tower require and how often?

Just like a car, a lighting tower requires regular servicing to ensure that it’s operating at optimum performance. We recommend having your lighting tower serviced every 500 hours (operating time) to keep everything running smoothly.

However, you can also conduct daily, weekly or monthly checks of your lighting tower as a precaution to make sure everything is working as it should.

Daily Checks
(Perform when the lighting tower is off)

  • Check all fluid levels and make sure there are no leaks
  • Check that all wiring and connections are secure
  • Check the lights for signs and cracks etc.

Weekly/Monthly Checks
(Perform when the lighting tower is off)

  • Check the tyre pressure, suspension, drawbar and hitch
  • Change fluids and filters if required
  • Check the fuel cap and surrounding area is clean
  • Check the cable of the mast to make sure it’s not loose
  • Check the mounting bolts are tight
  • Check the hydraulic fluid level
  • Wipe the lights down with a damp cloth to remove any dust and debris.

At PowerLink, we stock complete service kits for each PowerLink mobile lighting tower, to make servicing easier. Each service kit contains the necessary components needed for scheduled servicing. For more information or assistance, please email us at info@powerlinkworld.com.au.
