Let’s compare a generator to a car. If there is a noise or vibration in the car then you have it looked at by a mechanic. A car also needs to have the oil and filters changed on a regular basis – that’s why cars have a recommended service schedule.

A generator has the same maintenance and servicing obligations as the car. Both the oil and coolant in a generator have a limited life. The older they are, the less efficient they become. Through operation, fuel and filters become clogged with debris and contaminants which required them to be replaced regularly so the rubbish doesn’t travel through the engine. require replacing as they get clogged up with debris and contaminants that you don’t want to go through your engine.

Each PowerLink generator comes with a recommended service schedule to ensure that the genset runs optimally.  Most PowerLink generators have a recommended service schedule of every 500 hours.

Daily Generator Checks

It’s important to understand your generator so you can quickly determine when something is not quite right. Checking your generator daily for any anomalies will prevent serious issues from occurring. Here’s what we suggest:

1. Walk around the generator and check for leaks (fuel, oil or coolant) inside and outside the generator enclosure.
2. Check the coolant, oil and fuel levels, battery connections and fan belts.
3. Make sure the generator is free from rubbish and foreign objects that could cause a fire or blockage.

It’s a good idea is to keep the generator as clean as possible. This will help you see if there are any leaks starting.

Generator Service Requirements Every 250 Hours (Optional Depending on Engine)

At every 250 hours of operation, we recommend conducting the following in addition to the daily checks.

1. Change the oil and oil filters as per manufacturers recommendations.
2. Drain the water from the fuel/water separator.
3. Check and clean the air filters depending on the environment being used.

Generator Service Requirements Every 500 hours

In addition to the 250 hour service, we recommend:

1. Check the fan belt tension.
2. Clean and check the cooling system.
3. Change out the fuel filter and fuel/water separator.

Annual Generator Service Requirements or Every 1,000 Hours

It’s best to complete a full service of your generator every year or every 1,000 hours, whichever comes first. This service comprises of the 250 hour and 500 hour services as well as changing out the air filters.

We also recommend draining and replacing the coolant and change the oil and fuel lines every 2 years.
